N is for...

is for Narration

“Do you realize you narrate everything you are going to do?”
My 13 year old pointed out one day
I looked at her confused.
“What are you talking about?”
She laughed and sat back in her comfortable position on the couch.
“Whenever you have to do something you say it out loud.”
Her examples included me announcing when I am going to the restroom, announcing when I am about to turn the channel, announcing every little thing that runs through my head.
She also mentioned that I always talk to myself aloud. Running ideas around so that everyone in the room can hear them.
Okay, so I talk to myself. I talk to myself a lot and yes I say it out loud. Okay I say it out loud a lot. I never really started to pay attention to myself until to my daughter said something.
I wonder why narrate myself all day? Am I really trying to relate to my family what my next move is going to be? I mean, let’s be honest. I always have to let them know where I’m at and what I am doing. If I go to the bathroom without informing my 2-year-old I hear,
“Mommy where are you?!”
If I run to the store to grab something and I linger a little too long I get a text from either my husband or my daughter wondering what’s taking me so long.
However, I don’t really think that is why I narrate my actions and my thoughts. I believe it is a way for me to organize my thoughts and my next steps. There’s so much going on in my mind every second of every day that I talk to myself to break through the chaos that is my mind.
I do this so that I can accomplish something even if it means occasionally I may announce when I go to the restroom. According to my 13-year-old, my 5-year-old does the same thing. Well,  it’s good to know the kid got something from me even though she came out looking exactly like her dad.

  1. Donnee, I've always heard that when you're talking to yourself, you're at least getting the right answers.

After reading your post, I know that around our house, with two of us over 70 years old, we do a lot of narration. Otherwise we may forget what we're doing! Thank you. xoA

    1. Annis-- You are not over seventy, no way. If that's true, you've redefined the age concept for me!

    2. Donnee- Different strokes. If everyone acted the same, this world would be one boring place, wouldn't it?
